American Roots Hall of Fame
2003 Results

Many of you will probably get or pick up a copy of the March issue, but just to make sure you all know how it turned out, here it is. I haven't included the intro that's in the mag, basically explaining the HoF's genesis and the process that led to these results, however it is worth mentioning that, after consulting with various people, it seemed best to go for a large inuagural intake, and also to put those who didn't make the cut but did get substantial support to go forward to the next ballot. [If you are interested in the genesis, much of that information is still on this page; just scroll down a ways. - Bill]

The * means that person was inducted during the nominations. I haven't included the vote tallies because they really cluttered things up, but if you're really interested in the breakdown, I can supply those figures. Incidentally, in the mag I said 1,897 people had participated but when I was setting this email up I noticed a duplicate address and after going through the whole list looking for more, that number came down to 1,852 voters.

Thank you for being one of them and for all your help and patience with this. I'm rather bummed that Cliff Bruner and Bob Dun didn't do better but there's always next year and you can send in nominations at any time.

best, John Conquest, 3rd Coast Music

More I think about Betty Ritter’s petition to have Doug Sahm inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, an effort that may, as in the case of Ritchie Valens, take years to bear fruit, if indeed it ever does, more I feel that if there was no mechanism for recognizing him while he was alive, there damned ought to be one that honors him in death without anyone having to jump through hoops to get it done.

So here’s the deal: I’m proposing we set up an American Roots Hall of Fame that gives everyone who wants to participate the right to nominate and vote for people whose names they think should be carved in marble, or at any rate cyber-marble, for their contributions to the music. It’ll have nothing to do with record or ticket sales, label affiliation or media exposure. It’ll all be about the music.

Right now I’m just floating the idea and if it’s greeted with a storm of apathy, so be it. None of the proposals that follow are carved in marble. I absolutely welcome suggestions and comment.

Initially I figure on involving five constituencies of people who’ve demonstrated a more than casual interest in the music, subscribers to 3rd Coast Music, Blue Suede News and Texas Jamboree, Freeform American Roots reporters and members of Friends of American Roots Music (FARM). If you don’t currently belong in any of these groups, no problemo, FARM membership is free, just go to www.friendsofamericanrootsmusic.org and follow the simple directions. If you belong in more than one of these groups, congratulations, you’ll get to make multiple nominations and cast multiple votes, one for each.

I envisage the actual HoF having two classes, In Memoriam and Lifetime Achievement, neither of which would be restricted to musicians, or indeed to individuals (ie a record label, venue or radio station can be inducted). Additionally, we could use the HoF framework to recognize the best work of each year, in categories such as Songwriter, Group, Album, Live Act, Male Vocalist, Female Vocalist, Instrumentalist, Non-musician (label, club, festival, DJ, writer, etc). We’ll need a name for them though. How about The Grams?

The way the HoF would operate is that anyone who wants to be involved emails me at me and I set up a HoF email group (which will not be used or made available for any other purpose). When that’s reached critical mass, I’ll invite nominations from everyone, then let you know who qualified (by getting at least two nominations, possibly more but we’ll see how that plays out) for a voting round. The crucial point of this mechanism is that it circumvents the need for a nominating committee, which is where the Country Music and Rock & Roll HoFs get screwed up.

Rule 1: There are no rules. I thought about setting up parameters, defining American Roots and Lifetime Achievement, but, fuck it, I’m going to leave it up to you guys. The only agenda here is to give some respect to the artists we love. God knows, none of them will ever be rich or famous, and probably never make it into any other Hall of Fame, two things that are not unconnected.

On account of I have some experience with these things, and kinda enjoy this shit to tell you the truth, I’ll be running the whole shebang, but Marc Bristol of Blue Suede News and Jason Shields of Texas Jamboree will have full access to every stage of the process. However, to make this work, and mean anything, we need your participation. JC
